What is a root canal?

Root canal treatment involves removing the “nerve,” or pulp tissue from a tooth. It is not removing the root, but rather the cleaning of the dead or inflamed pulp tissue in the canal that runs down the length of the root.

Why is a root canal necessary?

This is done to eliminate toothache pain caused by deep decay, or to help clear up an abscess or infection caused by the presence of dead pulp tissue inside the tooth. Contrary to popular opinion, this procedure is actually less traumatic than it is to extract the entire tooth.
